MacRumors recently discovered that Apple acquired iSlate.com which sent the blogosphere and the stock market into a frenzy.

Digging deeper TechCrunch found that iSlate is a registered trademark of an unknown Delaware company called Slate Computing, LLC. In Europe, the iSlate trademark was registered by a law firm that Apple uses.

While TechCrunch hypothesized that Apple may have used a dummy corporation to register the trademark (as they did with the iPhone), MacRumors has found some real evidence to support this.

Trademark application documents for iSlate reveal the signatory to have the exact same name as Apple’s Senior Trademark Specialist, Regina Porter. It is technically possible that these are two different individuals; however, that would be one amazing coincidence.

Interestingly, Slate Computing, LLC also filed for a trademark on the term, “Magic Slate”. This seems to be fall in line with the naming convention for the recently released multi-touch Magic Mouse from Apple.

Perhaps Apple plans to release a multi-touch tablet with the name “iSlate” and a multi-touch gesture pad named “Magic Slate”? Or perhaps Apple was just holding these names for product ideas. Hopefully we will find out on January 26th!

MacRumors discovered that the domain was originally registered in October 2004 by Eurobox Ltd. In 2006 it changed hands to Data Docket, Inc. In 2007 it was transferred to registrar MarkMonitor.com, a site which handles registrations and trademark protections for Apple among other companies.

After further investigation of the domain name registrant history, it seems Apple’s name was temporarily exposed as the actual owner of “iSlate.com” for several weeks in late 2007. It was changed back within a few weeks, but MacRumors has found the historic record proving Apple ownership of the iSlate.com domain

Using an “articulating frame,” the surface of such a device would create physical bumps or dots for the user to feel when it is in keyboard mode. Those surface features would retract and disappear when the device is not being used to type. It is detailed in an patent application entitled “Keystroke Tactility Arrangement on a Smooth Touch Surface.”

“The articulating frame may provide key edge ridges that define the boundaries of the key regions or may provide tactile feedback mechanisms within the key regions,” the application reads. “The articulating frame may also be configured to cause concave depressions similar to mechanical key caps in the surface.”

Interestingly, just yesterday the NYTimes released a report which cites a recently departed Apple employee who said, “You will be very surprised how you interact with the new tablet.”

They’ve also heard from a recently departed Apple employee that said, “You will be very surprised how you interact with the new tablet.”

A former Apple employee, whose name appears on numerous Apple patents, worked on an Apple tablet five years ago and recently told me when the first version of the tablet was shelved by Steve Jobs, a lot of the technology made it into other devices. He explained that components of these early stage concepts are already out in the marketplace. If you have an iPhone, for example, you’re carrying around a mini version of an early Apple tablet.

Apparently, the barrier to producing earlier versions of the tablet was the lack of software. With the App Store doing so well this clearly will no longer be an issue

The company has rented a stage at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco for few days in late January, say their sources.

Apple used the YBCA stage as recently as September for their music event in which Steve Jobs announced new iPods.

Analysts and the rumor mill strongly believe Apple will soon launch the must anticipated tablet.

“We believe there is a 75 per cent likelihood that Apple will have an event in January and a 50 per cent chance that it will be held to launch the Apple Tablet,” Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster wrote in a new research note. “If Apple announced the Tablet in January, it would likely ship later in the March quarter.”

“They’ve told select developers that as long as they build their apps to support full screen resolution — rather than a fixed 320×480 — their apps should run just fine,” their source says.

The tablet device is not expected to go on sale in January; rather, it will only be demoed. Presumably this is so other developers have an opportunity to update their apps before launch.

Business Insider thinks its likely that Apple will unveil tablets in several different sizes over the coming months.

BGR just heard that a 7″ tablet is a 100% definite and rumors of a 10″ tablet have been all overthe net for some time.
